Another Great Barbecue Sauce

In general, I am not a chef. In my house, I do very little of the cooking, although I do enjoy it when I get the chance. The one thing that I have always loves to cook, and insist on cooking every time, is barbecued meat.

I love barbecuing, grilling, roasting, smoking anything that involves placing a good cut of meat over high heat and open flames.

I have to confess that one of the things I like about this form of cooking is that it is so easy to get good results. As long as you have the rights barbeque sauce, you can not go wrong.

Until recently, I never had to try a barbecue sauce recipe, because there was a locally made barbecue sauce called Memphis Minnie’s that was just simply spectacular. Unfortunately, it recently went under.

I tried cooking with other locally available barbecue sauce recipes, but it was just not the same. People who had praised my cooking in the past were much less lavish with their praise. I just could not get the same results.

I looked everywhere for a barbecue sauce recipe that would duplicate the flavor of Memphis Minnie’s, but it was all in vain.

Finally, I figured out that I would have to invent my own barbecue sauce recipe. I had no idea how to go about doing this, and had to learn all kinds of new things. Preparing a barbecue sauce recipe is not as easy as you might think.

You have to strike a delicate balance between preserving the flavor, and creating something that is delicious immediately after it is cooked. Almost any good barbecue sauce recipe, it turns out, has to be used within a week of being prepared. Otherwise, it will become stale.

The fact that I lost my favorite recipe for barbecue sauce turned out to be a blessing in disguise. You see, once I started experimenting with barbecue sauce recipes, I found out quickly that you can make something that is much more delicious than anything you can buy in the store.

As long as you are able to use it up within the next couple days, you can make something that is spectacularly flavorful and much more healthy than any commercially available barbecue sauce recipe. Knowing this, I have decided to never buy barbecue sauce again.

Why would I, when I can make something that tastes much better? I never got so many compliments before!

For multi-person trips this is some of my favorite cookware: the GSI Outdoors Ketalist. It is a 1 Liter backpacking kettle and comes with a nesting and insul…

  1. Thanks for the review. A Foon is different to a Spork, Spork =
    Spoon/Fork/Knife where as Foon = Spoon/fork which I prefer, i hate cutting
the side of my mouth with a Spork (in the case of metal Spork) Btw, nice
    dog :)

  2. I just picked up one of these kettles at REI. I got just the kettle, not
the whole cook set. It only cost $22.95, that’s pretty cheap. I picked up
this kettle to use with a solar oven I ordered. Since the kettle is dark
gray it should work ok. I will find out when my solar oven comes in the
    mail.

I tested the kettle out on my trangia mini stove/burner. It worked out
quite nicely. So far I am very pleased with my purchase.

  3. Yeah buddy, talk about weight…I used to carry a small cast iron frying
pan [4″] and a blue ceramic coated camping cup. Effing heavy by today’s
standards. I do have to say though….NOTHING cooks, smells or tastes
better than food made in cast iron. LOVE it. I might sacrifice something
else [axe?] to carry it though.

  4. I use this set and it’s awesome. I’ve done the Wal-Mart grease pot and
those shitty drug store mess kits, and this set beats them all because it’s
light, simple, stable, compact and multi-functional.

  5. Off the subject in a way, but I never preferred the Snow Peak 700…the
stainless lid is really too heavy and mine didn’t fit well.
Until recently I exclusively used the Snow Peak 600 with an aftermarket
titanium lid from the Four Dog Stove Company. Recently I discovered the
Evernew 500 mug/pot. After 40+ years of practicing the ultralight ethic it
was as if a prayer had been answered! Now it’s my exclusive cookware item.
If I had any complaint at all it’s actually about 50 ml. too small in
volume. It works perfectly for Mountain House ProPaks. But the standard MH
meals call for 2c water. As the water begins to boil it expands and as the
boil becomes vigorous it will sometimes try to “push” the lid off. A bit
more volume would prevent that. Obviously the Evernew 500 can’t accommodate
the freeze dried offerings that require 2-1/2 cups…mostly the
    Backpacker’s Pantry offerings.

I would never suggest that you abandon your GSI. You’re happy with it, it’s
inexpensive, and you mentioned a critical word: “durable.” Even true
ultralighters need concern themselves with durability even if it means more
weight. But for group trips I rely on the MSR 0.85 L Titan Kettle. I bought
mine in 1998 before it was even called the Titan. MSR has since changed the
dimensions and have added insulation to the handles and lid knob. Even when
I’m not on the trail I use it at home twice each day to make coffee or tea.
So it is durable. Now the bad news: price. Oh well…

  6. I have this set as well as the Pinnacle Dualist (for two person stuff).
The Ketalist is technically designed for one person. The one with the
neoprene is the cup, hence the sippy cup style lid and the insulation for
hot drinks, the other one is the bowl. But of course you can split it up
if you dont need a drink when the bowl is in use for two people to use, we
most always need a cup and bowl per person. The Pinnacle Dualist is
amazing for two person backpacking since it will even hold your fuel/burner
as well as everything else and at 1.8L will give you enough water for your
drinks and rehydrating your food all in one single boil for two people. And
the bowls/cups are 20oz instead of the 14 ish of those in the ketalist so
it gives you enough to eat without refilling like the smaller ones can
need. I wish the Kettle was a bit bigger to hold more than those really
tiny fuel cannisters too. If they ever made one that used the larger bowls
which would then hold the fuel too, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Having
said that, for the size, weight, durability, functionality, and price, the
ketalist is hard to beat for one or even two person if you can do with just
one cup per person and dont mind the smaller size.
