This historical and traditional pattern, Old British Castles, intricately rendered by a Miss Fennel back in 1928. She, the daughter of a Master Engraver, created these original drawings from old book photographs and steel engravings. OBC is certainly one of the best known patterns from Johnson Brothers and has been in production since 1930. Each piece of china depicting a scene of a different castle has extended to 45 castles. Some of the most famous castles included in the OBC Pattern are – Cambridge, Dunstable, Exeter, Haddon Hall, Kent, Stratford, and Warwick. This platter featuring Canterbury Castle in a blue and ivory toile is crafted for everyday use measuring 13.75 inches can go in the freezer, microwave, and dishwasher. This platter is well suited to be used for both elegant and casual entertaining.Depicting some of Britain’s oldest castles with intricate detail, this 70-year-old Johnson Brothers dinnerware pattern appropriately bears the name Old British Castles. Although traditional in appearance, the high quality earthenware construction and glossy finish give the collection the strength to function comfortably in today’s fast paced households. Each chip-resistant piece ably withstands the rigors associated with modern kitchen conveniences such as microwaves, freezers, and dishwashers.
With a pale cream background, this oval serving platter displays its images in a beautifully contrasting navy blue. Centered on the dish, the artwork depicts an elegant castle in a rural 1794 Canterbury setting. Clusters of flowers adorn the generous plate rim while its edge is slightly scalloped. Measuring 13-3/4 by 1 by 11-1/4 inches, the platter can be passed for hors d’oeuvres or rest on a tabletop to serve ham, asparagus, or any part of the evening meal. This piece fits comfortably in both casual and formal environments and can be set with matching dinnerware and additional serveware for a highly coordinated table. — Amy Arnold
